Description
The image in this piece comes from a1960’s booklet for chiropractors, demonstrating special exercises to reduce back pain. The image opposite is from the same source. In the original image the figure’s face is visible however, the artist’s decision to cover it with a white dot suggests a meaning that is associated with criminals or victims. The strange posture might also suggest something sexual.
The hyper-realistic composition is countered by the two abstract white dots. As this imageis all about balance, the second dot maintains a compositional balance and echoes the delicate balance in the posture of the figure. An image is never just “an image”. It will never exist objectively as it meets different viewers, each with his private world of association
