1901-1968
Born in Transylvania
Immigrated to Israel in 1921
Levanon settled in Safed from the late 20’s till his death. As a son of a rabbi, he was raised on the biblical stories of the Holy Land and in Israel, his spiritual concept merged with the actual physical landscapes.
Levanon used landscapes as a starting point for his unique interpretation, creating mystical, floating scenes that contain a visionary essence. In his works, the spiritual history of the holy cities of Jerusalem and Safed translated into colors and shapes. As Nachum Gutman wrote: “Levanon came to this country charged with spirituality in search of an ancient mystical bond to the land. His work express this love”.
