British 1823-1899
Green was not only a painter but also an art teacher and an astronomist, a founding member of the British Astronomical Association. There is even a crater on Mars named in his honor.
In the 1880’s Green was commissioned by the Royal family to teach art to Queen Victoria.
Like other European painters in the 19th century Green travelled to “The Holy Land” and painted with watercolors, that were easy to transport. His topographical scenes of the land of Israel are romantic and portray not only the landscape but also its inhabitants.
