Carelli Gabriel

1821-1900

An Italian artist born into an artistic dynasty in Naples. After studying in Rome and returning to Naples in 1840, he became the protege of the 6th Duke of Devonshire. This brought him to England where he married an Englishwoman. He was admitted into the Royal Academy in 1874 and in the 1880’s came to the attention of Queen Victoria, who became his patron for the rest of his career.
Carelli was know mainly as a watercolourist and travelled widely in search for inspiring subjects. His travels brought him to the near East and North Africa.
